Cargo-Planner started in 2014 with a complaint. Erik Törnblom’s father, a sea captain, told him the tools that existed could not produce a realistic load plan — they arranged cargo, but not in a way anyone could execute. Twelve years of the problems the research does not model followed: centre-of-gravity intervals a port will accept, segregation tables, load-bearing limits, the discharge order for a multi-stop route.

So we put it to a test anyone can check. Against 149 planning requirements, Cargo-Planner documents 117 — 27 more than the next best of the nine leading load planning tools we compared. Every verdict quotes the vendor’s own documentation, and ours was scored last, by a separate auditor, under rules fixed before it was.

Where the formulations stop

The research assumes a box. Freight isn’t.

Every academic formulation of container loading, and every benchmark dataset the field measures itself against, assumes a rectangular container filled with rectangular items. Four things our customers load every week break that assumption — which is why a tool built on those formulations cannot take them.

Cargo with space inside it A cabinet, a shelving unit, an L-shaped desk. Items declare the cavities inside them and smaller cargo is packed into those cavities - anchored, so they travel with the item when it turns. Cargo is not a solid block. Structure inside the container Mezzanine decks, internal walls, corner posts and structural frames, each carrying its own load limit and its own stacking behaviour. Model them once on the equipment and every plan built on it loads around them. The container is not empty. Containers that are not cuboid Eight independently tapered corners and a floor spacer: the nose of a trailer, the sloping ceiling and floor of a ULD. The usable space is the shape the equipment actually is, not the box that would contain it. Containers that change size An extendable trailer has one length closed and another open. Whether the extension was needed is something the plan tells you, not something you tell the plan.
